Thomas Francis Barhorst,
Age 92, of Hardin-Wapak Road, Anna, passed away peacefully of natural causes Saturday morning, March 16, 2024, at the Wilson Health Hospital in Sidney, Ohio. He was born March 21, 1931, in Fort Loramie, Ohio, to the late Edward & Agnes (Gariety) Barhorst. On August 6, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph, Tom married Bernice (Huelskamp) Barhorst who survives. Also surviving are 14 of 15 children: Michael Barhorst (dec.), Steven & Mary Barhorst of Sidney, Joann & David Myers of New Bremen, Robert & Tammy Barhorst of Anna, Mary & Lynn Fell of Spencerville, Ronald Barhorst of Wapakoneta, Donna & David Sprague of Sidney, Carol & Steve Dircksen of Minster, Linda & Doug Stienecker of Anna, James & Jacqui Barhorst of Sidney, Julie & Brad Schulze of Fort Loramie, Keith & Karen Barhorst of Anna, Connie & Ryan Smith of Wapakoneta, Cathy & Louis Bruns of Maria Stein and Lori & Ryan McAleer of Cincinnati; 47 of 49 grandchildren; 44 of 45 great-grandchildren; four siblings: Carol Lochtefeld of Sidney, Barb & Larry Francis of Russia, Edward & Alice Barhorst of Sidney and Jane & Vernon Monnin of Covington along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Joseph Greve; two grandchildren, Hannah and Alex Barhorst; a grandson-in-law, John Fullenkamp and a great-grandson, Colton Barhorst; five siblings: Virgil & Beverly Barhorst, Lenore & Albert Otte, Ruth & Alvin Jutte, Leonard Barhorst, Mary & Bill O’Halloran and brothers & sisters-in-law: Leroy Lochtefeld, Linus & Juletta Huelskamp, Lester & Mildred Huelskamp, LeRoy & Betty Huelskamp and Donald Huelskamp.
Mr. Barhorst served in the US Army during the Korean War and had been engaged in farming all of his working life. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, the McCartyville Knights of Columbus Council #5239 and the Shelby County Right to Life. Tom was dedicated to his family and enjoyed working on the farm. Over the years, he would never miss an opportunity to go hunting.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in McCartyville with Rev. Andrew Reckers presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Family and friends may call Tuesday 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie and Wednesday 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the church gathering room.
