Steven Gerard Hoying,
Age 64, of Staley Road, Anna, passed away Monday evening, August 26, 2024, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. He was born November 17, 1959, in St. Marys, Ohio, to the late John “Edward” Hoying & Patricia (Weaver) Hoying Griner. On April 26, 1980, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville, Steven married Catherine (Poeppelman) Hoying who survives. Also surviving are his Step-father, Rolland Griner of Kennesaw, GA, five children: Regina Forkin-Lyons & Timothy Lyons of Marysville, Krista Withrow of Jackson Center, Amy Hoying of Sidney, Brittany & Ryan Axe of Anna and Craig W. & Alexis Hoying of McCartyville; 13 grandchildren: Regan, Nora, Liam, Rowan, Fiadh, Callum, Kaydree, Bennett, Colson, Breanna, Brennan, Bryson and Eliza; one brother, Glen & Violet Hoying of Roopville, GA, and six siblings from the Griner family: Rolland Griner Jr. & Brandon Brooks of Tampa, FL, Valerie & Rick Highers of Woodstock, GA, Cynthia Griner of Vacaville, CA, Rachel Griner of Vacaville, CA, Theresa & Billy Vance of Concord, NC, and JoAnn & Donna Griner of Tampa, FL; several sisters & brothers-in-law: Linda & Larry Homan of Chickasaw, Tom & Laura Poeppelman of McCartyville, John & Amy Poeppelman of Minster, Margie & Ron Bruns of McCartyville and Dave & Denise Poeppelman of McCartyville along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Hoying and his father & mother-in-law, Donald & Verona (Otting) Poeppelman.
Steven was a 1978 graduate of Fort Loramie High School. He owned and operated the former McCartyville Custom Body Shop & Garage. Over the years, he also worked at Crown Equipment in New Bremen, Hydro-Aluminum and Norcold in Sidney. Steven was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and would tell stories about them and his kids to anyone who would listen. Steven was also a huge Ohio State fan and enjoyed collecting memorabilia, especially animated Christmas animals. He had a great love for the farm where he grew up and spent many hours there raising cattle and tinkering on projects. Years ago, he played softball for several leagues including Ruthie’s, Brucken’s, Tanker’s and of course, McCartyville Custom Body Shop.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in McCartyville with Rev. John W. Tonkin presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Family and friends may call Friday, 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie and Saturday 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the church gathering room. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or charity of choice. Private condolences may be expressed at the gehretfuneralhome.com website.
