obituary

Paul C. Maurer

February 2, 1933 - July 9, 2024

Paul Clarence Maurer,

Age 91, of Greenback Road, Fort Loramie, passed away peacefully of natural causes Tuesday evening, July 9, 2024, at the Lima Memorial Health System, in Lima, Ohio.  He was born February 2, 1933, in Fort Loramie, Ohio, to the late Edison & Bertha (Larger) Maurer.  On June 25, 1955, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, Paul married Joan (Brandewie) Maurer who preceded him in death on April 12, 2023.  Surviving are nine children: Jack & Debra (Imwalle) Maurer of New Bremen, Don & Patricia (Childers) Maurer of Findlay, Kathy & Dale Gaier of McCartyville, Rick & Jane (Doseck) Maurer of Botkins, Therese & Richard Borgerding of Piqua, Patty & Rick Luttmer of Fort Loramie, Becky & Jim Suhr of Springboro, Paul T. Maurer of Piqua and Laura & Tom Poeppelman of McCartyville; 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; three siblings, John & Sandy Maurer of Arlington, TX, Mary Angela & Corey Siddall of Newport, KY, Tom & Kathy Maurer of Fort Loramie and a brother-in-law, Matt Zimmerman of Fort Loramie along with numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two siblings, Doris Jean Zimmerman and Jim & Madeline Maurer as well as several brothers & sisters-in-law:  Joe & Ginny Brandewie, Les & Dorothy Brandewie, Moe & Arlene Brandewie, Walt & Jean Brandewie and Paul & Rosie Brandewie.

Mr. Maurer was a 1951 graduate of Fort Loramie High School and a US Army veteran of the Korean War.  In 2002, Paul retired from Fort Defiance Construction where he had been Bridge Supervisor.  He had previously been employed for most of his career at Frantz Brothers Inc. of Sidney.  Over the years, Paul would occasionally drive a milk truck route for Larger Brothers.  He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Fort Loramie American Legion and the Minster Fraternal Order of Eagles.  Paul was an avid sports and NASCAR fan.  He also enjoyed playing guitar and singing for Joanie, the children, and grandchildren. It was a joy for Paul’s children to hear him play the guitar before going to mass as a family on Sundays. Paul especially enjoyed following his grandchildren’s activities, helping them with woodworking projects and taking them fishing. Building bridges and working with concrete was his life’s work and he was a very diligent and hard worker! However, Paul would always say that the grandchildren and great-grands were his most treasured accomplishments! He taught his children and grandchildren so much about life, being a good person through his wonderful friendly and thoughtful example, and gave them numerous positive traits to carry with them through life and pass on to future generations.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Monday, July 15, 2024, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie with Rev. Stephen Mondiek presiding.  Interment with military honors will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.  Family and friends may call Sunday 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.  Memorials may be made to the Fort Loramie Rescue Squad or charities of choice.  Private condolences may be expressed at the gehretfuneralhome.com website.
